VENUE SPOTLIGHT: PARADISE RIDGE WINERY

My Associate, Alex Barranco and I, recently were invited to attend a luncheon and site visit of Paradise Ridge Winery. Nestled in 156 acres in the hillside over Santa Rosa, it’s an hour’s drive from San Francisco with expansive panoramic views of the Russian River Valley. Our gracious hosts, Sonia Byck-Barwick, Co-Owner and Managing Partner, along with Martha Marquez, their Wedding and Events Manager, greeted us with a very warm “Welcome to Paradise”.

We began to delight our senses with a marvelous glass of their newly released 2009 Sparkling Shiraz – exceptionally marked by a refinement and elegance. This sophisticated "bubbly" had a very limited quantity, so I could not resist purchasing it for my own enjoyment. Mmmm-la-la-la-la!!!!!

The winery is replete with a Tasting Room, a dramatic event space that can hold up to 150 guests seated, a veranda for your cocktail reception, and an adjacent outdoor ceremony courtyard, all offering sweeping views of their lush vineyard landscapes and Sculptural Gardens. Spectacular sculptural works of art are speckled throughout Marijke’s Grove with majestic Oak Trees and open greens flanked by the natural beauty of the outdoors.

The dream all began when Owners/Founders Dr. Walter Byck and his Marijke Hoenselaars migrated to Santa Rosa from Holland and raise a family back in 1965. Years later, in 1978, Walter found the perfect place … he came home to his family and said “Marijke, children … I have seen Paradise!” – and the rest was magic!

After touring this magnificent property, we partook in beguiling delicacies catered by the nationally acclaimed Ramekins Culinary School of Sonoma. They now provide catering services led by their Event Sales Manager, Susan Da Ponte with events flawlessly executed by their Offsite Production Manager, Caren Veelo.

And so our gastronomic journey begins . . . . .

Tantalizing appetizers deserving immediate attention were Pickled Strawberries with Laura Chenel Goat Cheese on a Crostini; Thinly Sliced Sonoma Duck Breast on Potato Gaufrette with a Tart Cherry Glaze; and Coriander and Sesame-Seared Ahi Tuna Tostadas with Roasted Tomato Salsa and Lime Cream.

A great pairing to these hors d’oeuvres was the Winery’s very own “Nectar of the Gods” – 2009 Blanc de Blanc Sparkling Wine ... tickled my fancy!

As a preface to what has truly become a most impressive epicurean adventure, their Master of Cuisine, Executive Chef Doug MacFarland, stylishly prepared his “Ode to Spring” Luncheon Menu for our fabulous feast that excited the palates and soothed the soul.

For Starters, we began with an Amuse of a flavorful Chilled Asparagus Soup with Crab and Shaved Black Truffle, that gave refreshing texture and flavor a new meaning.

The Spring Salad was every bite a bit of Spring, with Wild Arugula Pea Shoots, Fresh Mint, Fresh English Peas, Pea Puree and Crispy Fried Sourdough Croutons.

This Crispy Skin Arctic Char with Roasted Fingerling Potatoes, 5th Street Farm Spring Vegetables, Garlic Confit and Piquillo Pepper Puree excelled above their impressive main course selection and garnered applause.

Saving the best for last was the "piece de resistance" - Rustic Strawberry Shortcake with Housemade Strawberry Rhubarb Jam and Vanilla Whipped Cream - a sinful treat for an appropriate finale.

This divinity was paired with a 2009 Ode to Joy Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc – a magnificent dessert wine dedicated by Marijke Byck-Hoenselaars, honoring her favorite symphony, and her love for music, art, poetry and all things beautiful.

A fine selection of exceptional vintages boasted a great complement to our sumptuous meal - 2012 Jubilation Sauvignon Blanc, crafted in honor of their founder, Dr. Walter Byck's 80th Birthday; and a 2009 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley.

"Kanaye Nagasawa" - A collaboration between winery founders Marijke Byck-Hoenselaars, Walter Byck and the Friends of Kagoshima Association, the exhibit includes photographs and the fascinating life story of Nagasawa. "The Spirit of the Man" - The Spirit of the Man is an exciting new sculpture exhibition at Paradise Ridge Winery. Opening on Sunday, May 20, 2012, the yearlong show features 34 major works by sculptors based locally and throughout the United States. More than an art exhibition, The Spirit of the Man honors artist and art patron Al Voigt, co-founder of the Voigt Family Sculpture Foundation, who passed away in 2011.

How the Met

They first met at Ireland's 32 Pub, one of their favorite bars, last Summer 2010. After a failed first date, many wonderful ones to follow, several baseball games, a trip to the zoo, and a few months of dating - they made things "Facebook Official" (if you knew Kelvin at all, this was a very important moment for him).

The Proposal
Kelvin - " I finally found a ring that I liked and the jewelers said that they would have it ready in time for our trip to Hawaii at Christmas. I got a call a few weeks before and told me that it would actually take much longer. I went back to the jewelers and couldn't find anything. They told me to ask AnneMarie to come back with me. I wanted it to be a surprise, but I didn't know what else to do. "

AnneMarie - " The next day, the jewelers were thrilled to meet me and helped me pick out a ring. They all knew and loved Kelvin's visits to their store. We looked through rings for a while, but I didn't see any that caught my eye. I finally asked one of the jewelers, 'I know it won't be ready until Christmas, but can I see the ring that Kelvin picked out?'. The jeweler ran to the back and brought it out. I burst into tears when they showed it to me. "

Kelvin - " She was a crying mess! "

AnneMarie - " I knew it was worth the wait. I wanted it to be a surprise. "

Kelvin - " I wanted to take her to Crissy Field where there's a beach and a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge. She didn't want to drive all the way there. I said, 'are you sure? It's such a nice day!'. Nope! "

AnneMarie - " I kept wondering when he would ask - New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day came and went. One morning in February, we took our dog, Maggie, to Fort Funston for a long walk. "

Kelvin - " I was looking around during the whole walk. I was trying to figure out a place to ask. I had her sit down on a bench for a second and then changed my mind. I ended up walking up a hill and asking her. "

AnneMarie - " When we got to the top of a sand hill, he got down on one knee and pulled out the ring. He had picked it up the night before without me knowing. "

Kelvin - " It's crazy how nervous I was even though I knew she would say YES! "

AnneMarie - " Of course, I said YES! "

And so a year later, their wedding date was set for last February 2, 2013. They exchanged their Nuptials at St. Paul's Church, followed by a spectacular celebration at the famed Olympic Club, Lakeside.

When I look back at this wedding, I know that I will always think of you. You are the dark horse. Your are the man behind the whole occasion. You are the reason that Kelvin and I will remember this day as the start of our lives together. From the very bottom of my heart, and from Kelvin's heart as well, THANK YOU! I don't know how you do what you do - but you do it with grace and style. "

It was love at first sight when they met at Pinole Valley High and were sweethearts then ‘til now. She an accomplished Choreographer who danced her way to his heart. He's the NFL's top Safety with the Atlanta Falcons who scored a touchdown and fell in love. With them are their amiable English Bulldogs named Sir Lester DeCoud and Leela Mary Jane DeCoud. Both Lester and LeeLa’s dispositions are equable and kind, resolute and courageous, with a demeanor that is pacific and dignified – Thomas and Edwina's precious gems.

These two have been unseparable from the very start. And now they have finally tied the knot last May 19th at the majestic Hotel Shattuck Plaza.

Their spellbinding, magical Wedding design replicated to that of a Vintage Hollywood Private Club replete with vivacious colors of Red, Black and White with embellishments of Feathers, Flowers and Bling! "19", or rather XIX, is a very sentimental number and had special meaning to both of them. His birthday is on March 19^th… hers on April 19^th … and their Wedding on May 19^th- even their Bridal Suite was #519!

These gorgeous images were beautifully captured by the dynamic duo of Brook and Alisa Todd with A+B Photography. And I would be remiss if i didn't give special kudos to my incomparable "Wedding Dream Team" who were all masters of their craft in helping me put together this "Wedding Masterpiece"!

Lastly, to my fabulous Newlyweds, Edwina and Thomas – thank you so very much for giving me this opportunity, and for your love and newfound friendship. Congratulations!

Congratulations to Jason and Laura on their Wedding held last Saturday, January 26th 2013, at the Hilton San Jose with their closest Families and Friends.

How they met

Laura's a beautiful Korean girl adopted by U.S. Military Family. She grew up to be a gorgeous Salsa Dancing, Judo-throwing, Golf Tournament winning babe!

Jason, on the other hand, is essentially a "Water Baby". He's a passionate Surfer, obsessed with DJing. Raised in a contemporary American fashion - he was "Boy Scout of the Year" for Marin County in 1999.

On the night they first met, it was a night like many others. Loud music blasting, people dancing and that annoying girl that is at every gig asking the DJ "can you play that one song by ... ". Except, no ... not this girl - this girl was different. Jason was immediately gripped by her jaw-dropping, stunningly gorgeous petite looks, with a shy but earnest smile. He caught her eye and in no time, gave this girl full deserving attention.

After many plates of Sushi ... they later fell in love!

The Proposal

Jason: " Every year when the Christmas lights go up, you get a warm fuzzy feeling. I wanted this same feeling to remind Laura of our Engagement Night, which is why I chose to propose to her at 'Christmas in the Park' in downtown San Jose. "

Laura: " I didn't think our Engagement was ever going to happen. I was completely caught off guard by the most surprising proposal. Jason had placed a "Laura, Will You Marry Me?" sign on the back of the Christmas Choo-Choo Train that circled the park. And as soon as I saw it, 'Tears of Joy and Happiness' poured streamingly down my face. I was the happiest Girl in the world! ".

Jason: " There were lots of tears all around. People were snapping photos everywhere ... it was like a Paparazzi! Our good friend, Dave Ethridge of AVR Films, captured the surprise engagement and made an amazing film of the evening's memorable moments (see below). In celebration, we went to Dinner at The Fairmont across the street. "

Laura: " I'm so happy to be marrying the 'Man of my Dreams'. He even picked out the 'Ring of my Dreams'. And I'm so very thankful to have the memories of our Engagement Night forever! "

Bridget & David Tie the Knot!

David Poland and Bridget Owens' Wedding last September at the historic Camp Richardson Resort in South Lake Tahoe has very special meaning to them. They decided to begin their relationship on September 1, 2003 while hiking in South Lake Tahoe. Their relationship was long distance with Bridget starting work on her Ph.D. in Santa Barbara, California and David living and working in Lakewood, Colorado. In October 2005, David moved to Santa Barbara to be closer, while he still traveled for work as a Software Consultant, and in September 2006 they moved in together. Despite living together, the adventure continued with many travels to far away places including Hong Kong, Africa and The Philippines. With the harsh economy and few available jobs in 2009 they moved to O'Fallon, Illinois where Dave found work, but Bridget moved on to Helibad Heiligenstadt, Germany where she found a short-term postdoc at a research institute. On a visit in September 2010, David proposed, and loving Germany so much Dave decided to follow Bridget again. They both sought out new career opportunities which led them to their new home in Hanover, Germany. Now 2 years after being engaged and one week after their 9th year together, they are sent off on their new adventure of marriage and living happily ever after.

Engie Messiha and Minah Attia were married last October at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, followed by their grand celebration in the beautiful grandeur of San Francisco City Hall, the city's "Crown Jewel". It was a Wedding fit for royalty in all its magical splendor.

Once in a while, you come across someone that has an infectious smile ... the one you envy ... a smile that is always showing and full of joy. If they smile at you, there's no chance that you can't help but smile back. If you catch them smiling at each other, there's no doubt in your heart that they are head over heels in love. Engie is one of those people, and Minah definitely brings it out in her. And how can you not - he's tall, dark and handsome and she's got beautiful eyes that mesmerize. It's no wonder these two are perfect for each other.

Rhea & Sumant Tie the Knot!

Rhea Antonio and Sumant Chakravarthy were married last October at the Treasure Island Navy Chapel followed by their Reception at Pavilion by the Bay.

The first time Rhea and Sumant met was at a mutual friend's cotillion back in 2001. It was there that Rhea would end up figuring out the name she would be taking nearly 11 years later. On a fine February evening, knowing that she had to pronounce his name, Rhea approached Sumant and asked, "How do you pronounce your last name?". From here, the story is different depending on how you ask. Rhea claims Sumant, in a harsh, annoyed tone remarked, "It's phonetic!" Sumant thinks otherwise. Sumant claims that he answered, "Oh, it's phonetic. Chak-Ra-Var-Thee" in an offensive, calm manner. We will let you decide who is correct. Regardless of who is right and who is wrong, it was there that the relationship first started.

Winnie Chan and Alex Hwee were married last June at the Hotel Sofitel in Redwood City. Their Ceremony took place outdoors on the Outdoor Deck by the Lake, followed by their Reception in the Fountain Courtyard and Ballroom. The vibrant colors of of the hotel's interiors and the colors of the blue lake and the tree-lined exteriors were the inspiration to their design, painted with sophisticated contemporary hues of cobalt blue, chartreuse and violet. Images of their majestic day were taken by Ricky Wong of W Photography.

CONGRATULATIONS to CHRISTINE YUSI and ERIK FRAZIER! They were married last August 4th at The Fairmont San Jose. How lucky was I to have met these two very special people. And what a way to celebrate a Wedding ... having it the same day as my Birthday making it even more special - and just as special as they are! Like their magnetic persona, they're wedding was full of vibrance, high energy, enthusiasm, warmth and love. And that's exactly how i designed it to be ... a splash of electrifying colors bursting with life! What an incredible evening - all I heard was nothing but rants and raves, and saw hips shakin' and breakin', booties bumpin', and everyone swaggin' and swayin'. The energy was wild, crazy and fun non-stop 'til the last beat! And just as I thought the fun would never end, it got even better. They surprised me with a Birthday Cake presentation, then dragged me onto the dancefloor and got everyone "tripping the lights fantastic" with a group line dance. I was completely stunned, but I was a good sport. I too joined in the fun, as you'll see below - all captured on film!

Through the eyes of their masterful photographer, Allen Baguilar of Bling Focus Photography, you can't help but reminisce that memorable day through the incredible images he froze in time. And to my superb "Wedding" Dreammakers ... you are all exceptional beyond words - talents unmatched like no other!

Lastly, to our fabulous Bride and Groom - from us to you . . . this was all a labor of love. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for our lifetime and newfound friendships, and for allowing us this opportunity to create the Wedding of your dreams!

CONGRATULATIONS to DANIELLE CHAPOT and JONATHON MORRISON! They were married last June 16th at the Kohl Mansion in Burlingame. Design concept was replete with french-inspired "shabby chic" elements, creating awe-inspiring elegance and sophistication to their special day.

Family and Friends came from all corners of the World from Singapore, Shanghai, Paris, London, Washington D.C. and Chicago, just to name a few, to witness their nuptials. AnneMarie & Kelvin Tie the Knot!

AnneMarie and Kelvin got married last May 29, 2012. Surrounded by an intimate group of their closest friends and families, these two lovebirds tied the knot at San Francisco City Hall's magnificient rotunda, in true Hawaiian style (an expression of their love for the Hawaiian Islands). But this was only a teaser ... the big celebration is scheduled for next February 2, 2013 at the Olympic Club Lakeside.

Both the Bride and Groom, including all their Guests were greeted with gorgeous Meile Leis and Single-Stranded Leis handmade with double-stranded White Dendrobium Orchids and Ti Leaves and others made with White and Green Dendrobium Orchinds. These stunning floral creations were made by the oh-so-talented Jeeryn Dang of Tanjeeryn Designs. A sumptuous Dinner Reception followed at the Tony Bennett Room at Original Joe's in North Beach. Limousine transportation was provided by Mannie Diaz with C and M Limousines. And their memorable moments were all captured on film by the Photo Guru himself, Orbie Pullen of Orbie Pullen Photography. And of course, yours truly (f. duncan reyes events by design) who helped them put this gorgeous day together - and so excited for next year's grand soiree.

" 5 stars all around for Duncan, who lived up to his legendary reputation. Duncan was actually the first vendor we hired. My husband had experienced Duncan's talent at his older brother's wedding and kept saying how smooth everything was. We were lucky that Duncan was available on our date and hired him without hesitation. Starting the month before the wedding, Duncan was the main point of contact for every vendor we had hired. A wedding is such a production with so many people involved, so it was super helpful to have a coordinator handle major communications and follow up. Duncan came up with a detailed, 6-page timeline and ensured everyone knew where they needed to be at all times. He has great ideas and is always accessible, quick to respond, and detail-oriented. One example that impressed me was how Duncan caught an error on my seating chart. To organize our guests, we had three different spreadsheets in Google Docs. One spreadsheet indicated everyone's entree selections. Another spreadsheet listed everyone by table. A third spreadsheet organized everyone alphabetically. Without my asking, Duncan cross-referenced the three spreadsheets and asked me if one guest was still coming, because her name with missing from the alphabetical order spreadsheet. Good thing Duncan caught that, because I was using the alphabetical order spreadsheet to lay out my seating chart! His timing couldn't have been better because he caught the error before I printed the chart. Whenever anyone asks me how my wedding went, I tell them it was everything I hoped it would be and more. The day really was about as perfect as it could have been! I give a huge chunk of the credit to Duncan for making sure everything went off without a hitch. A relaxed bride is a happy bride. I absolutely recommend Duncan as someone you can trust to make your day happen. Hire him so that you can kick back and enjoy every moment! "
